n. m.

Substance très subtile que l’on supposait remplir la plus haute région de l’air.

Il se dit couramment au figuré de la Partie la plus subtile et la plus élevée de l’atmosphère.

Il s’est dit spécialement, en termes de Physique, d’un Fluide invisible, impondérable, éminemment élastique, que les physiciens supposaient être répandu partout et servir de milieu de transmission à la lumière, à la chaleur, à l’électricité, etc. Les ondulations de l’éther.

Il se dit, en termes de Chimie, d’une Liqueur spiritueuse très volatile qu’on obtient par la distillation d’un acide mêlé avec de l’alcool. On distingue les éthers sels et les éthers oxydes. L’éther acétique est un éther sel. L’éther sulfurique est un éther oxyde. Un flacon d’éther. Respirer de l’éther pour calmer une souffrance. L’éther est un poison. L’éther excite ou insensibilise.

En termes de Thérapeutique, Sirop d’éther, perles d’éther, Remèdes qui contiennent de l’éther sulfurique.
